n.
A gradual process in which something changes into a different
and usually
more complex or better form.
Structural
Integration is a scientifically valid manual therapy that
lengthens the twisted and shortened fascia (connective
tissue) of the body by movement, education and pressure.
The idea is to align the different body segments (pelvis,
legs, thorax, and head) in the standing body so as to
lessen the effects of gravity's relentless pull. A properly
aligned body is actual lifted and supported by gravity.
SI is actually an educational process that is based from
Dr. Ida Rolf's original work. It is influenced by Osteopathy,
Yoga, and Alexander Technique.
Each and every person responds differently as the body
unwinds past injuries and misaligned joints shift into
balanced movement. As joints are subjected to any problems,
the bones can twist in opposition to one another compressing
the joint capsule. This tension can begin to degenerate
the joint. By re-educating the proprioceptor cells in
the joint and lengthening the shortened tissue, more space
can be brought to the area. This relieves chronic pain,
misalignments and brings about efficient movement. The
joint will feel smoother and freer. Chronic pain relief,
increased energy, and emotional well-being are the most
commonly reported benefits.
Connective tissue, also known as fascia, is found in every
system of your body. It forms the tendons and ligaments,
and wraps the muscle fibers, organs, and bones of your
body. If you removed every cell from your body that wasn't
connective tissue you would still maintain your shape
and structure. The most superficial fascia lies deep to
your skin and maintains your current shape. One of the
fascia's amazing properties is that it can be reshaped
by pressure and aligned through proper movement. This
is the reason SI maintains its effects throughout the
body for a lifetime. Most traumatic injuries, emotional
stress, and bad habits are relieved as the connective
tissue is brought back to a more balanced state and symmetry
is brought throughout the entire body. As your body goes
from randomness to balance, you are experiencing your
own Structural Evolution.
